A puppy is but a dog, plus high spirits, and minus common sense” Agnes Repplier
The course comprises of an on going assessment charted in a booklet which is awarded to the owner along with a Certificate and rosette upon successful completion of the course. Correct socialisation is a major part of this course along with introducing basic training. Children are welcome to attend.
Cardiff Canine Citizens is a Kennel Club Listed Status Club, offering The Kennel Club Puppy Foundation Course for puppies usually over twelve weeks and usually up to six months of age, although exceptions may apply for toy and small breed puppies. Puppies need to be fully vaccinated in order to attend the classes.
The course covers basic obedience such as sit, down, stand, leave, stay, recall and walking on a loose lead. We also cover and advise on topics such as mouthing, toilet training, crating, grooming, jumping up and attention seeking!
The course is seven weeks in duration and fifty-five minutes per week from week two -seven. One the first week attendance will be required for a ninety minute session without puppy. This will be on the Saturday afternoon prior to the first session and will be around 1.30-3.00 but this will be confirmed at time of booking.
This is so that we can cover enrolment, payment, shop purchases if required and discuss the course content including how dogs learn, the different value of treats, reward ratio, commands etc. without the distraction of a puppy! See dog equipment explained and demonstrated and speak with other owners in the same situation. We want you to avoid some of the classic pitfalls of owning a new puppy!

- Should I get another dog/puppy as company for my puppy?

What do I need for the week one session?
For this session you will need; your payment of £55 either cash or cheque (cheques are payable to Cardiff Canine Citizens), puppies vaccination certificate and cash for any optional shop purchases.
What do I need for the following sessions?
For the following six weeks you will require your puppy wearing a well-fitting collar (no check/choke chains please) or a harness and an ordinary lead (rather than an extending lead), some small, tasty treats, poo bags, a toy and a grooming implement. Also try to ‘empty’ puppy prior to classes by allowing puppy ample toileting opportunities. It may also be advisable either to only feed a small meal several hours before or not to feed your puppy just before attending class, as all of our training is reward based puppy is less likely to work for treats if it’s already full!

Socialisation & Habituation
Socialising your puppy in its first six months plays a critical role in the development and training of a confident, friendly and outgoing puppy who will respond positively to humans and dogs alike.
Puppies are naturally curious and playful about the world they live in. It is the perfect time in their lives to introduce them to some basic training and expose them to new experiences and other dogs.
Remember that the things that seem adorable when your dog is a puppy – like jumping up, pulling or play biting – can become serious issues if you don’t nip them in the bud. Classes are great fun for both the dogs and the humans alike. And many people find great dog walking buddies too!
Puppy not vaccinated yet? Don’t miss out on giving your puppy an early opportunity to pick up life skills. Book a pre-vaccination home visit with me.
A recommended variety of dog treats, chews, toys and grooming implements are available for purchase during training classes. Those not attending class may make purchases up to half an hour before class. See below for details of times and locations.
